Take a giant leap into your local library – hop on for the Summer Reading Challenge Libraries across Gloucestershire are getting ready to launch into orbit for an outer space adventure this summer.

The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is ‘Space Hop’ and the free fun will start on Saturday, July 17th, when children can start signing up at their local library. Children will be encouraged to read six or more books during the school summer holidays and collect rewards along the way, as well as a medal or a certificate for successfully completing their challenge.

Gloucestershire’s libraries are looking for teenage volunteers to help with recruitment and activities for the Summer Reading Challenge 2010. Contact Carole Bowe on 01452 425030 or e-mail carole.bowe@gloucestershire.gov.uk if you can help.

This is the 12th Summer Reading Challenge and it grows in popularity every year. Last summer, more than 11,300 took part in the ‘Questseekers’ challenge in Gloucestershire – the highest number yet. Nationally, it reaches 725,000 children aged four to 12. It is run by The Reading Agency, an independent charity that works to inspire people to read more. It is supported by children’s publishers.

David Paynter, Head of Gloucestershire County Council’s Libraries & Information, said: “This year’s ‘Space Hop’ challenge will see children boldly go to new worlds to discover the joy of reading and will nurture a lifelong love affair with reading and books. “We know that children who take part read more books and read more widely than those who don’t, with potentially life-changing results. Our librarians will be happy to guide them on their mission, so mums, dads and carers, why not pop to your local library and find out more?” Illustrated by leading children’s book artist Tom Percival, ‘Space Hop’ coincides with the 350th anniversary of The Royal Society’s scientific endeavours, and the 2010 BBC Year of Science. Young Space Hoppers will meet Finn, Jessie, Nabil and Safiya – the crew of the ‘Ex Libris’ – as they embark on their mission to set up the first lunar library.

An interactive ‘Space Hop’ website, www.spacehop.org.uk has now launched, linking children with top authors and illustrators, and giving them the chance to talk about their favourite books and to share reading ideas.

Cllr Antonia Noble, Gloucestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Caring and Community Services, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to keep kids entertained and keep up their reading over the holidays, so that they go back to school fired up and ready to learn. “It’s a great chance for the whole family to join in the fun, so why not ‘Space Hop’ on board at your library and take a journey into your imagination?”

Younger children are invited to take part in the ‘Space Hop’ Book Crawl and progress to their own certificate.
